What is over 65s travel insurance and how does it work?
Travel insurance for over 65s is a type of specialist cover that protects older travellers, and includes cover for pre-existing health conditions. We believe that you should be able to enjoy whatever type of holiday you like. We have no upper age limits on our policies.
Getting the right type of travel insurance before you leave is a vital part of planning any trip, so we offer a range of different levels of cover. Travelling without insurance could leave you out of pocket if something goes wrong on or before your holiday.
For example:
- According to the NHS around 60% of adults over 65 have high blood pressure.
- The World Health Organisation (WHO) says that high blood pressure can increase the risk of heart, brain, kidney and other diseases.
- An overnight stay in a US hospital can cost up to $10k per night!
- Over 65s travel insurance can cover costs related to declared medical conditions such as high blood pressure.
Planning to take a cruise? Remember to add our cruise travel insurance to your policy.

What’s not covered?
We strive to provide the best cover possible, however, there are some situations no travel insurance will cover. For example:
- Undeclared medical conditions: If we don’t have your full medical history we may not be able to assist during a medical emergency.
- Travelling to places against FCDO advice: While we offer worldwide travel insurance, we can’t provide cover if you go somewhere that the FCDO says is too dangerous or risky.
- Choosing not to travel: Sometimes things don’t go to plan, but cancellation cover only applies if you have a valid reason not to travel, such as illness, injury or bereavement. See your policy documents for full details of cover.
We also offer optional add-ons for activities like extreme sports, hiking, cruises and golf, available on most policy types.
We will consider all pre-existing medical conditions, find out more about medical travel insurance. Some conditions will require you to pay an additional premium to cover related medical bills.
The excess and amount of cover available varies depending on the level of travel insurance you buy. Make sure you have a look at our policy wording to see the full terms and conditions, including what is and isn’t covered.

How much does over 65s travel insurance cost?
The cost of over 65s travel insurance can vary depending on a number of factors. Understanding this can help you to find a policy that meets your budget without compromising on essential cover.
Some key areas that can affect the cost of your insurance are:
- Pre-existing medical conditions: Your medical conditions may carry potential additional risk which require an extra premium to cover.
- Destination: Medical costs can vary widely from country to country, so your destination plays a part in determining the cost.
- Activities: The activities you plan to do can also affect your premium. Riskier activities like mountain climbing are likely to increase your premium.
Additionally, the length of your trip can also impact the cost of your insurance. Longer trips may result in higher premiums.
According to our 2024 annual survey, 84% of travellers are planning on taking more than one trip this year3. If you’re one of them, an annual policy may offer better value compared to purchasing separate single trip policies for each trip.

Frequently asked questions
Is travel insurance more expensive for over 65?
Over 65 travel insurance does cost more than a standard policy. This due to the increased costs of claims, including emergency medical cover, and other factors which affect the probability of claims occurring.
Do I still need over 65s travel insurance if I have a GHIC card?
As a British citizen, you should carry your free Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) whenever you travel to Europe. Having your GHIC means that you’ll have the costs for some medical procedures covered within Europe.
However, you still need to have European travel insurance to cover you for costs that the GHIC might not cover. This includes things like transport to and from hospital or even repatriation back to the UK in the event of a medical emergency.
Does over 65s travel insurance provide extra cover for medical emergencies?
Travel insurance for over 65s includes cover for unexpected medical emergencies, and those related to conditions declared during the medical screening process. Depending on the level of cover you choose, you’ll be covered for up to unlimited medical expenses.
Do seniors in the UK need to pay for travel insurance?
Yes. If you’re going on holiday it’s vital that you have travel insurance in place to protect you for unforeseen events, such as emergency medical treatment. You may also want cancellation cover and personal liability.
When should you take out over-65s travel insurance?
The advice from experts like Martin Lewis, is to get your cover as soon as you book your trip. If this is not possible, you should get travel insurance as soon as possible. Your policy will only be valid if you have bought it before you leave the UK.
Do I need over 65 travel insurance if I’m going to Europe?
Yes. Any time you travel outside of the UK, you should have travel insurance in place to protect you and your trip if something goes wrong before or during your holiday.
