Can you get travel insurance if you have a disability?

You can with InsureandGo. We think travel insurance should be available to as many people as possible. That includes the 24% of Brits who have a disability.

We understand that not all disabilities are visible. Our travel insurance for disabled adults covers physical disabilities. Also, sensory disabilities and learning difficulties. Mental health conditions and speech and language disorders are also covered.

94% of our customers rated their experience as ‘Excellent’ or ‘Great’ so you know you’re in good hands3. Here’s why finding the best disabled travel insurance is a must:

We want you to enjoy your holiday, not worry about unexpected expenses. With no upper age limit, we’ll consider any medical conditions you may have. That way you’ll know you’re fully covered.

You’ll need to tell us all your pre-existing medical conditions. If your medical history isn’t accurate, you may have to pay for unexpected medical costs. Our policy wording provides full terms and conditions of what is and isn’t included.

What types of disability does InsureandGo’s travel insurance cover?

Disabilities can be short-term or life-long. They may not be immediately visible. But while they come in many forms, disabilities won’t stand in the way of a great holiday.

According to European law, all passengers with a disability can receive assistance when they fly, free of charge. Disabled travellers also have EU rights on ferries and cruise ships.

The FCDO recommends that all travellers with a disability take out travel insurance. Our travel insurance for people with disabilities includes the following conditions:

Find out about our optional add-ons for activities like extreme sports, cruises and golf.

But it won’t put a stop to your travel plans with InsureandGo. We can cover your trip for multiple pre-existing health conditions. Just tell us all your conditions. We’ll create a quote that works for you.

How do we define a pre-existing health condition? It’s any disease, illness or injury for which you have, in the last two years:

Examples of the types of health conditions we can cover include:

You must declare all your pre-existing medical conditions when buying disability travel insurance. Otherwise, you won’t be covered if you have an emergency related to your conditions while away.

Our reviews speak for themselves

Charlotte was very clear

“Charlotte was very clear and made sure I understood before carrying on with the next question. She had patience and took time with me as I have a disability that affects my speech. She did really well with me. Other people sometimes can’t understand me.”

Frequently asked questions on disability travel insurance

How much does disability travel insurance cost?

The cost of travel insurance for disabled travellers depends on several different factors:

  • Your disability: The type and severity of your disability will impact the cost. For example, how it affects your daily activities. Also, any medication, treatment or equipment you might need.
  • Other pre-existing medical conditions: If you’ve got any other health conditions, this will impact your premium.
  • The level of policy cover you go for: At InsureandGo we offer four levels of cover. These are Budget, Silver, Gold and Black, so we’re sure to have a policy to suit you.
  • Your age: Travel insurance is generally more expensive as you get older.
  • Trip details: Longer trips or expensive destinations generally lead to higher premiums.
  • Additional cover: You may want to include extra cover for valuables – a wheelchair, for example.

Will disability travel insurance cover a carer?

No, our disability travel Insurance does not automatically cover a carer or travel partner. If you need a policy that covers you both, a group travel insurance policy is a great idea. It means that, if you have to cancel your trip because of your disability, you’ll both be covered. And there’s much less paperwork if you do need to make a claim.

Is a disability considered a pre-existing medical condition?

Yes, it is. Health conditions, illnesses and disabilities are considered pre-existing medical conditions. You’ll need to declare any disability when getting your travel insurance quote, to ensure you’re covered.

You’ll need to declare any disease, illness, condition or injury for which you have:

  • Taken any prescribed medication or required medical treatment within the last two years
  • Consulted a medical practitioner and/or been registered as an in or outpatient at a hospital, clinic or GP surgery in the last two years.

Still not sure? Talk to us. We’ll be happy to answer any questions you have.

Do I have to declare my disability on my travel insurance?

Yes, you must declare all your pre-existing conditions when you take out a travel insurance policy with us. This includes any disabilities.

Declare any disability, even minor ones. Not doing so could mean your claim gets rejected.

We’ll ask you for details during the medical screening process. At this point, you must declare all pre-existing conditions. Then we can offer the right cover.

We will not cover you if:

  • Your state of health is significantly worse than you told us
  • You know you have a terminal condition, but have not told us
  • You know you will need medical treatment during your journey
  • One of the purposes of your journey is to get medical treatment
  • You are travelling against the advice of a medical practitioner
  • You are not fit to travel on your journey
  • You have been placed on a waiting list that could cause you to cancel or curtail your trip

Read our policy wording to find out more.

Will disability travel insurance cover mobility equipment?

Being a wheelchair user in Britain (1.2 million strong) can mean travel stress. A study found 40% of disabled travellers had mobility aids damaged or lost by airlines.

Getting the right disability travel insurance policy is key. Our disability travel insurance will cover your mobility equipment whilst you’re abroad. This includes wheelchairs, walking frames, sticks, supplies and equipment designed to help provide mobility.

Is your mobility aid particularly valuable? Adding gadgets cover protects single items, up to £1,000.

Who can buy an InsureandGo disabled travel insurance policy?

All our disability travel insurance policies are available to UK residents. This means:

  • Someone who has been living in the UK or the Channel Islands for at least six of the last 12 months
  • They must be in the UK at the time of purchase
  • All trips must start and end in the UK

Unfortunately, we can’t provide cover to anyone who doesn’t fit this description.
