Home Travel Insurance Gadget travel insurance

Packing your phone, laptop or camera? Our gadget travel insurance has got you covered. It protects valuable items against loss, damage, or theft. There’s up to £2,000 total cover, and up to £1,000 per single item. And with InsureandGo, we pay 99%+ of all claims within five working days1.

What is gadget travel insurance and do you need it?

Unfamiliar routines. New places. Holidays are exciting. But with so much to think about, it’s no wonder things get lost, damaged or stolen.

When you travel, gadgets are more than possessions. Your camera captures precious memories. Your laptop keeps you entertained on a long flight. Your mobile phone is your boarding pass, credit card and your personal language translator!

Travel insurance covers most personal items as standard. But it may not be enough to cover the cost of replacing expensive items. And that’s where travel insurance with gadget cover comes in.

Travel insurance for gadgets is a cover add-on. It protects your most valuable items up to a higher value than the normal policy amount. You can add it to any of our single trip and annual travel policies, including worldwide and Europe. Then you can enjoy your gadgets and your getaway!

Here’s why finding the best travel insurance with gadget cover is a must:

To get travel insurance with gadget cover, select the “valuables extension” add-on when you buy your policy. Our policy wording provides full terms and conditions of what is and isn’t included.

Alternatively, you can call our UK-based call centre on 0808 178 7567. Our team will guide you through the process.

You’ll need to tell us all your pre-existing medical conditions. We can’t cover any costs related to medical issues that aren’t declared. If your medical history isn’t accurate, you may have to pay for unexpected medical costs.

Which gadgets are covered?

When you add extra valuables cover to your policy, we can cover all the items listed below. That’s up to £2,000 total cover, with a limit of up to £1,000 per single item.

  • Photographic, audio, video and electrical equipment. That includes CDs, DVDs, video and audio tapes and electronic games
  • MP3 players
  • Games consoles
  • Personal organisers
  • eReaders (including eBooks and Kindles)
  • Computer equipment
  • Laptops
  • Tablet PCs (including iPads)

What else does InsureandGo’s gadget travel insurance cover?

Our gadget travel insurance covers your items for loss, theft or damage while on holiday. But some terms and conditions apply.

What’s covered?

  • Loss of items
  • Theft of items
  • An item needing to be repaired or replaced following accidental damage

After taking off an amount for age, wear and tear and loss of value, we will reimburse you for a valuable item that has been lost, damaged or stolen during your trip. The maximum payment for any one item will be £1,000 with a total payment for all items of £2,000.

Gadget cover can be added to all our holiday insurance policies. They cover you for:

  • Medical emergency expenses.
  • Cover for cancellation of your trip.
  • Our 24-hour emergency assistance team, available to call, day or night, wherever you are
  • Over 100 sports and activities covered (see your policy wording for a full list of activities)
  • Personal belongings and baggage cover.
  • Personal money, passports and travel documents cover.
  • Accommodation cover.
  • Legal expenses cover.

The excess and amount of cover available varies depending on the level of travel

What’s not covered?

  • Property you leave unattended (other than in your locked accommodation)
  • Any lost or stolen items not reported to the police within 24 hours, or without a police report
  • Any items lost, stolen, or damaged when not in your control or with an airline/carrier

We reserve the right to apply an additional 10% deduction to any item claimed with a value over £100, following our standard deductions for age, wear and tear and loss of value, where you cannot prove you own it or provide proof of purchase (e.g. original receipts).

Each provider will have different things it can or cannot include in a policy. However, there are some situations no travel insurance will cover. For example:

  • Events or reasons to claim which took place before you booked the trip or the insurance was purchased cannot be covered. Insurance exists to cover unexpected events outside of the insured’s control
  • Claims which are less than the excess for that section of cover. For example, you cannot claim a £40 lost item if your baggage excess is £60
  • All of our travel insurance policies include cover for cancellation of your trip, but there may be some exclusions. For example, you won’t be covered to cancel if you simply decide not to go

Remember that to get gadget insurance, you need to book travel insurance and add gadget cover to that policy.

Gadget insurance for travellers with pre-existing medical conditions

When you have a pre-existing condition, protecting your tech can be vital. Many people with diabetes monitor blood glucose levels through their smartphone, for example. If you have a disability, items like digital hearing aids can be expensive to replace.

At InsureandGo, we’ll consider all medical conditions, including COPD, heart conditions, and asthma.

Our online medical screening process is easy. To learn more, read about travel insurance for medical conditions. Or, take a look at our policy wording documents. If you’d rather talk to someone instead, please get in touch with us.

You must declare all your pre-existing medical conditions when you buy your travel insurance. Otherwise, you won’t be covered if you have an emergency related to your condition while away.

How to book our gadget travel insurance

Getting to grips with technology can be complex. At least getting your travel insurance is easy!

Here’s how it works:

1. Let us know about your trip
We need to know a bit about your trip. Tell us who you want to cover and when you want the policy to start. We’ll ask about any pre-existing medical conditions. That’s so we can provide you with the right level of cover.

It’s quick and easy to give us this information, either online or by calling our team:

2. Get your personalised quote
Once we have all the details we need, we’ll send you your quote. At this stage, you can go ahead and buy your policy, or save the quote for the future. If you decide to buy online, select the “valuables extension” add-on to your policy.

Our reviews speak for themselves

Really good – give them a call.

Spent the day on about ten travel insurance sites before I had a call back from InsureandGo. Wish I had just called them in the first place. Policy was for two over 50s for six months, visiting 11 countries. We required cover for walking/hiking over 3,000 metres, plus extra gadget cover. After a pleasant but thorough chat, the quote was as good as any I had found. An informative service and a straight-forward conversation covering all bases. Would definitely use them again.

Frequently asked questions on gadget travel insurance

Do I need gadget cover travel insurance?

It depends on what you’re taking on your trip. Our standard travel insurance covers many personal items as standard. But it won’t be enough to cover valuable items, like laptops, cameras or gaming consoles.

That’s where gadget travel insurance comes in. This optional extra can be added to any InsureandGo policy. It covers up to £2,000 in total, and up to £1,000 per single item.

Gadget cover travel insurance can protect against:

  • Loss: If your gadget is lost or stolen.
  • Damage: If your gadget is accidentally damaged.
  • Theft: If your gadget is stolen.

When deciding if you need to add gadget cover to your travel insurance policy, consider:

  • The value of your gadgets: If your gadgets are expensive, the cost of replacing them could be significant.
  • Your travel itinerary: If you’re travelling to high-risk destinations, gadget cover can be even more important.
  • Your chosen policy: If you’re opting for our highest level of cover, Black, it has a single item limit of £500. That could be enough cover if you’re not taking anything particularly valuable.

By getting gadget cover travel insurance, you can enjoy your trip with peace of mind knowing that your gadgets are protected.

How much does travel insurance with gadget cover cost?

The cost of travel insurance with gadget cover can vary depending on several factors, including:

  • Your trip length: Longer trips generally cost more.
  • Your destination: Some destinations are considered to be higher risk.
  • The value of your gadgets: The more expensive your gadgets are, the higher your cover needs to be.
  • The type of cover you choose: The level of protection you choose will also affect the cost. At InsureandGo we offer four levels of cover: Budget, Silver, Gold and Black.

Travel insurance for gadgets doesn’t have to be expensive. You may not need additional gadget cover if you’re travelling with an inexpensive smartphone. Our standard travel insurance policies include cover for personal items. The amounts vary, but our Gold policy covers single items up to £300.

Is my laptop covered by travel insurance?

The short answer is: it depends! Travel insurance does cover personal items as standard. But adding gadget travel insurance protects your laptop up to a higher limit.

The extent to which your laptop is covered by travel insurance depends on:

  • How much your laptop is worth
  • The level of cover you’ve chosen

In the UK, a new laptop costs between £500 and £1,000 on average. Choosing a Black policy, our highest level of cover, does protect single items up to £500. So if your laptop is relatively inexpensive, you might not need additional gadget travel insurance.

However, our Budget policy only covers personal items up to £100. Our Silver policy covers items up to £200. And our Gold policy offers £300 worth of cover.

That’s where laptop travel insurance comes in. Called gadget travel insurance here at InsureandGo, it covers £1,000 per single item.

Add it to your policy and we will reimburse you for lost, damaged or stolen laptops during your trip. Please note: we take off an appropriate amount for age, wear and tear and loss of value. We cannot cover the cost of downloaded content such as music, books or games.

You’ll need to show us proof of purchase, like a receipt for your laptop. If you can’t, we reserve the right to apply an additional 10% deduction to any item claimed with a value over £100, following our standard deductions for age, wear and tear and loss of value.

Does home insurance cover gadgets on holiday?

It’s unlikely your gadgets will be covered on holiday. That’s unless you’ve specifically requested personal possessions cover as an add-on to your policy.

Check with your home insurance provider. Even as an add-on, personal possessions cover is limited. It may not be enough to cover high-value items for specific types of travel damage and loss.

If you’re travelling with expensive items, adding gadget cover to your travel insurance policy is highly recommended. It provides more extensive protection, covering your valuable items for loss, theft, and damage while you’re on holiday.

Does gadget travel insurance cover a cracked screen?

Yes. Gadget travel insurance covers the cost of any item needing to be repaired or replaced following accidental damage.

But exclusions do apply. See the wording of your chosen policy wording for full details, but in general a cracked screen won’t be covered if:

  • You do not exercise reasonable care for the safety and supervision of your property
  • Your screen is damaged because you left your phone unattended in a public place
  • Your screen is cracked from confiscation or detention by customs or other officials or authorities
  • Your screen is scratched due to wear and tear
  • Your screen was damaged in transit and you did not notify the airline or shipping company immediately

Will camera lenses and accessories be covered by travel insurance?

Our standard travel insurance policies cover any personal items which are lost, stolen or damaged. That includes camera lenses and accessories. The amount covered depends on the level of policy you choose.

Check the maximum single-item limit on your chosen policy. Camera lenses can be expensive to replace. Standard travel insurance may not be enough to cover your photographic equipment. Adding gadget cover to your policy will ensure your camera lenses and accessories are fully protected against damage, loss and theft.

How do I add gadget insurance to my policy?

When you buy your policy online, select the “valuables extension” add-on to your policy. Alternatively you can call our UK-based call centre and our team will guide you through the process.

You can also add valuables cover to an existing policy by contacting us.
