For many of us, one of the best parts of travelling is to learn about the history and people of the area. One great way of finding out about new cultures is to visit local museums during your trip.

Here are 6 of the most interesting museums across the globe. Each one tells us something different about the country where they’re found, so start planning your trips today.

ACROPOLIS MUSEUM – ATHENS – GREECE

First conceived in the 1880s, the Acropolis Museum houses the incredible wealth of artefacts found around the Parthenon. While it has undergone many changes over the years, the modern building will amaze you; the museum is sleek and airy, so you can enjoy the exhibitions without feeling too crowded. You can even take a stroll over a preserved neighbourhood from ancient Athens.

THE LOUVRE – PARIS – FRANCE

The Louvre is one of the world’s most famous museums; many of us would recognise it for its distinctive glass pyramid alone. The numerous collections let you explore some of the finest in Western art, from the Middle Ages up to 1848. The building itself is something of an exhibition too; the palace dates back to 1200, and innovative architects have continued to expand and develop it as recently as 2011. French heads of state, as well as royalty, used to live in the Paris building before 1870.

THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION – WASHINGTON DC – USA

The Smithsonian is a colossal complex comprising 19 museums, education & research centres, and a National Zoo. If you spent one minute looking at each item on display, day and night, it would take around 100 years to see everything. So if you plan to visit this vast institution, you’re better off planning to see specific exhibits. Founded in 1846, the Smithsonian has something for everyone to enjoy.

MUSEUM OF QIN TERRACOTTA WARRIORS AND HORSES – XI’AN – CHINA

While this museum may only have one exhibit, it’s a truly incredible one. The world-famous Terracotta Army was discovered by farmers in 1974 and is still a one-of-a-kind experience. More than 8,000 intricately carved warriors and their horses stand guard around the tomb of China’s first emperor. This is a truly majestic sight that you will surely remember forever.

THE RIJKSMUSEUM – AMSTERDAM – THE NETHERLANDS

One of the world’s most respected art galleries, the Rijksmuseum is found in Amsterdam’s aptly named Museum Square. While the total collection is comprised of over 1 million objects, only around 8,000 pieces are displayed at any time. With art from 1200 to 2000, this museum can entertain you every time you’re in Amsterdam. If you’re in a hurry, you can explore the Gallery of Honour and enjoy some of the best Dutch art.

THE VATICAN MUSEUMS – VATICAN CITY – ITALY

Rome has plenty of choices when it comes to incredible museums, but it’s well worth visiting Vatican City too. This tiny sovereign city-state in Rome isn’t just home to the Pope. The Vatican Museums display incredible works from the Catholic church’s vast art collection. This includes ancient Roman sculptures and stunning pieces of Renaissance art.

Remember that you’ll need quality travel insurance no matter the cultural experiences you plan for your next trip.
